Huidobro published Poemas árticos
in Madrid in 1918, this being the last of a rapid series of publications which established him as a major new talent both in French and in Spanish. Poemas árticos
is particularly interesting in that it shows the author taking on board lessons learned from Guillaume Apollinaire—an early friend in Paris—and also Pierre Reverdy, with whom he collaborated in the magazine, Nord-Su
d, but who was to repudiate this early "Cubist" phase in his work. In any event, this was Huidobro's longest Spanish-language volume up to this point, and marks a significant breakthrough, which was also to exert an influence on the nascent Spanish avant-garde.
The volume also features the author's own French versions of some of the Arctic poems. This revised edition has a number of revisions to the translations but chiefly differs from the first edition in its textual layout, which now follows the 1918 edition as closely as possible.
