"Most of the poems [in this book] are variations or expanded translations of poems by Milton, Wyatt, Surrey, Charlotte Smith and Elizabeth Barrett Browning. In the case of Wyatt completely and Surrey (in ‘The Unfortunate Traveller’) and Smith (in ‘Petrarch of Petworth’), I have concentrated on their versions of Petrarch’s sonnets, sometimes the same ones. I believe I have signposted, either directly in titles, or through particular quotation in titles, the source poems; editions consulted are listed in the resources.
