Translated from Norwegian by Hanne Bramness & Frances Presley. Published with the financial support of NORLA — Norwegian Literature Abroad.
This is a series of short prose poems about photographs and photography. The photographs chosen range from those by very well-known photographers, such as Cartier-Bresson and Doisneau to less well-known, often female, photographers such as Francesca Woodman and Jitka Hanzlova. There is a sharp focus on women as photographers and as subjects. Some of the prose poems do not have reference to specific photographers, and seem to respond to private, family photographs; while some may not even relate to actual photographs. The poems use techniques of compression, juxtaposition and discontinuous narrative to engage with photography. They often focus on arresting, minor details in an image, what Barthes calls the 'punctum'.
