Entrances is George Messo's second collection, following From the Pine Observatory (2000), and is a remarkably evocative collection. Messo's is a quiet, reflective voice, but one that has much to tell, often of life in Turkey and the edges of Eurasia, where he has lived for several years. As Peter Didsbury says of this new collection — "There's a lovely spaciousness and sense of things and persons held in air. It seems to me that Messo is somehow bringing a whole region and set of cultures back into the European sphere. Any book which so beautifully invents for us the Choruh River and eleventh-century Georgia is OK by me."
Praise for George Messo's first collection included the following —
"One of the most compelling debuts in British poetry in recent years. Intense, mystical and linguistically charged, the poems are nevertheless rooted in place, and have a sharp eye for the beauty of the natural world . . . a book to celebrate, with its distinctly individual voice and vision, its oddness of perception. A deeply personalised world." (Jeremy Reed)
"Never mind this year's Forward Prize shortlist for best first collection; George Messo is a poet abounding in ability and integrity; a controlled syntax; a control of form; an unusual ear for music and vocabulary; and an ability to make this mode utterly his own." ( Poetry Quarterly Review )
"The best first new collection I've read in years." (Andy Brown, Stride Magazine )
