Andrew Brewerton was born in Wolverhampton in 1958, and read English at Cambridge. He is Principal at Plymouth College of Art, an Honorary Professor of Fine Art at Shanghai University, and in 2013 established the Plymouth School of Creative Arts – a mainstream, open-access, city centre 4-16 all-through school. He worked previously for a decade in glass-crystal factories and in academic appointments at the universities of L'Aquila and Wolverhampton, and at Dartington College of Arts. His critical writing includes Glass Tantra , on Buddhism and glass in China, and numerous essays, for example on the French glass artist Antoine Leperlier, the Beijing-based performance artist He Yunchang, and the painters Chris Appleby and Xue Guangchen. His poetry includes Sirius (1995) and Cade l'uliva (2003), both published as Poetical Histories by Peter Riley; open your mouth (Five Seasons Broadsides, 2009); and Via (Wild Honey Press, 2010). He is married to the painter and printmaker Jan Brewerton, and they have two daughters.
